I quickly learned when I opened O’Connell Law in 2010 that marketing is needed to grow your practice so you can help more people. I didn’t learn about marketing in law school – As an attorney, shouldn’t those who need my help just know to reach out to me? Well, unless you let people know what you do and why they may need you, they won’t know that you can help. We have been very fortunate to work with some wonderful marketing companies over the years. One of my marketing consultants, Mark Merenda, created the ad of “Fred” who you see included in this blog post. Sadly, Mark is no longer living, but his brilliance and creativity live on. I am so grateful to have had Mark in my life and to have helped me over the years.Reason to make an estate plan #10 ad

Reason to Make an Estate Plan Ad

Mark created this “Fred” ad for his clients over 10 years ago. The ad is a story and is meant to be funny and edgy. It makes one chuckle but also stop and think.

Although we used this ad numerous times in the past, it just recently went viral on social media. In fact, a reader of a local town magazine took a picture of the ad and shared it on Reddit. From Reddit, it quickly spread to Facebook. If you were a fly on our wall, you would have laughed seeing us get inundated with comments and not understanding where it was coming from. Some comments said we were a terrible firm with awful taste in music. Other comments from folks said that they wanted to know the other reasons to do an estate plan. It took us about a day to figure out what had happened.

We’ve now heard from hundreds of folks around the country about the ad (most folks loved it, and as mentioned above, a few did not). It spread so much on social media that I even got to talk with the “Fred” in the ad. “Fred” is a very nice man named Jeff who said this was a picture of him over 20 years ago. Amazing.

Everyone Needs an Estate Plan

I hope the ad makes you laugh. I hope the ad makes you realize that everyone needs an estate plan…even if there isn’t a “Fred” in your life. Take a look at the ad – Do you know anyone who needs to get an estate plan done?
